Before and After
Refurbishing An Ice Cream Freezer
What do you do when the bucket of your ice cream freezer falls apart? You go to the original company to get a replacement. What if the company no longer makes the size of freezer that you have? Then you have to find someone who can make a replica of the one you have. This is the case with 5 gallon and 10 gallon White Mountain ice cream buckets. It is a challenge to make a new bucket that is just the right size for the original hardware, but Jim enjoys a challenge.
He usually uses redwood since it does not rot easily. Stainless steel bands work best for they will not rust when salt is used for churning the ice cream. They are also of a thicker gauge to make them last longer.
It is believed that a chef of King Charles I of England was the first to make ice cream in the 1700's. It was kept a secret for a time but eventually the secret was found out and ice cream parlors began to spring up. It was actually in New York around 1846 when Nancy Johnson made the first crude ice cream freezer that ice cream became more popular. George Washington was especially fond of the frozen delicacy.
The 4 quart and 6 quart electric and manually churned White Mountain ice cream freezers can still be purchased. For more information on ice cream recipes and making ice cream click on this link White Mountain ice cream freezers
